Here is the link to the ad I found http://www.kucau.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/creativeads_1shampoo1.jpg . This ad is for Sedal hair products and I have seen this one and many others that are very similar to it in many of my Cosmo and Glamour magazines. It is saying that their product is so effective that it can even tame the mane of a wild lion into luscious and shiny long hair. This type of ad exaggerates the products effectiveness. This ad would greatly influence teenage girls and young women. It would be especially influential for people with crazy frizzy hair. If they can simply but this one product their lives would be so much easier. They would no longer be compared to a wild animal but gorgeous lady that most definitely would be asked out on a date by a hansom man. The advertisement agencies put so much effort into making it seem that their product will make everyone’s life better and fix all the problems of the world. In reality, however, having better hair will not be the answer to all of your problems. And even if it was, it’s not like there aren’t hundreds of other types of shampoos out there that will do the same thing for your hair. I see similar ads to this one everyday. They are on my TV commercials, ads in magazines, billboards on my drive back home, and even the sidebar of me web pages. With the way these ads are portrayed girls need to buy a million products just to look socially acceptable from lotions, anti-wrinkle creams, hair coloring, shampoos, perfumes, deodorant, and all types of make-up. Most of us fall into these advertisement traps too. Even seeing our favorite celebrity with a certain brand, if we use the same mascara maybe we will be that gorgeous and have paparazzi follow us around and have a multi-million dollar movie career (which is very doubtful). Even if the girl in the ad isn’t a famous celebrity she is always gorgeous with perfect skin, but she is still relatable to everyone watching and always happy with out a care in the world. It’s the little tricks like the hair flips that also reel viewers in and convince them that they NEED the product. Even the words they use like confident, beauty, and stunning. They are words that every girl wants to hear and make everyone feel better. Even though I know these are just marketing ploys I often fall in the madness and end up being convinced to purchase the product anyway. I guess the rhetorical devices used are just really that powerful.
